At first glance, Nehemiah is reminiscent of a genealogy that drags on for too long. But every part of the Bible is inspired, even long lists of things that seem monotonous. Take your time reading over these portions of the Bible, and cover them with prayer; God’s word never returns void.
In Nehemiah 3, the Jews begin rebuilding the temple. This chapter lists out which person built what part of the wall. There are different portions of the wall; examples include:
- The Sheep Gate
- The Fish Gate
- The Fountain Gate
There are different parts of the wall, like:
- Doors
- Bolts
- Bars
- Beams
And some of these peoples’ trades are listed, including:
- Goldsmith
- Perfumer
- Ruler
From this, I came to the conclusion that God uses each of our unique locations, abilities, and possessions to “rebuild the walls” of life. Our life’s work is to allow God to use us to build His kingdom—”rebuild the walls,” if you will.
We also see how we all come together with our unique essences and create something beautiful for the Lord, namely, by being part of His church. God used a goldsmith for one part of the wall, a perfumer for the other. You may be a teacher, an artist, a nurse, a mother, or a student. God wants to use you right where you are!
And, finally, God has a purpose for you. Hold your hands open, and He will place that purpose right there. Sometimes we will want that which we cannot do; David desperately wanted to build a temple, but God told Him no—David was God’s warrior. Instead, his son Solomon would be the one to build the temple.
Noah built an ark.
Abraham settled an unknown land.
Moses led the people out of Israel.
What will you do?
Start by rebuilding the wall today, using your location, talents, and possessions for God.
