Ever heard the verse render to Caesar what is Caesar’s? I bet you have.
In this passage, Christ turned over a coin and asked whose face was on the coin.
“Well . . . Caesar.”
“Exactly. Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s.”
But this verse doesn’t just have to do with taxes. And it doesn’t mean we give dollar bills to George Washington. Because, well—he’s kinda dead.
So let’s flip this around. We are therefore supposed to give to God what is God’s. Yes?
So what is God’s?
· Each small, sobbing leaf of a weeping willow tree
· The wings of birds
· The mewl of newly born kittens
· The fresh, delicious air
· The sunsets that paint the sky like a heavenly tie dye
There are a lot of things that are God’s. How do we give got the sky? How do we give God a bird?
More specifically, what are the things in the world that have God’s face on them?
– humans –
Primarily, we humans have the image of God stamped on us. Inside of us is a bit of a mysterious flame that we call a soul, formed from the dust of the earth and one loving breath of an Almighty Being. God has left his mark on us. Therefore, we belong to Him.
This means that we must give ourselves to God.
Give to God what is God’s.
This will revolutionize your life. Not only should we give ourselves to God, but we should also give the people in our lives to God. There may be people you love so much it’s hard for you to let them go.
But the Christian life is a paradox. To get closer to other people you must let them go. God may bless that and allow your relationship to grow, or He may take them away totally.
As a Christian, you not only have the face of God stamped on you, but you have the responsibility to uphold God’s image. We need to give Him a good name, a name He deserves.
How often do we just act like everyone else? It’s so easy.
So, this week, write this down on your hand, on your heart: Give to God what is God’s.
